Final Fantasy VIII, a title within the Final Fantasy franchise known for its divisive nature among fans, might undergo a significant revitalization if a hypothetical remake were to be undertaken by Square Enix. Director Yoshinori Kitase expressed his willingness to "completely rework the battle system" should such a project come to fruition, during an interview with IGN.

Kitase pointed out some of the problematic aspects of the original combat system, including the level scaling that ironically discouraged players from leveling up, and the Junction system, often deemed confusing. In FF8, players needed to extract spells from enemies or draw points, and casting a spell depleted its stock, negatively affecting the character's abilities when bound to statistics.

Although this system provided strategic options for some skilled players, for many, it turned out to be a source of frustration due to its complexity. Kitase's intention to overhaul these combat systems is seen as a prudent approach to potentially reviving the game's experience for fans.

Despite discussions surrounding a possible Final Fantasy VIII remake, Kitase reflects on the challenges involved in such an endeavor:

"I've found that attempting to recreate the kind of content found in RPGs of that era is not something that can be taken lightly. It's a significant investment of time and effort, and we need to carefully consider before embarking on such a project."

While a remake remains uncertain, fans can find solace in the imminent arrival of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, set to be released in just a few weeks.
