In a recent blog update and video release, Blizzard has outlined its vision for Overwatch esports, signaling a new era following the retirement of the Overwatch League (OWL) last year.
Blizzard's response to the conclusion of the OWL comes in the form of the Overwatch Champion Series (OWCS), an open regional ecosystem aimed at transforming Overwatch esports.
The 2024 season will be divided into distinct stages across the regions of North America, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. NA and EMEA regions will consist of four stages each, incorporating Open Qualifiers and Main Events. Points accumulated throughout these stages will determine qualification for OWCS international events. A partnership with FACEIT has been established to facilitate the execution of OWCS in the NA and EMEA regions.
Conversely, the Asian region will be subdivided into three parts, covering South Korea, Japan, and the Pacific. Unlike other regions, Asia will feature two annual stages, in addition to OWCS international events. The operation of competitive stages in the Asian region will be overseen by the partnership with WDG, while WARA.GG will exclusively handle registrations.
Blizzard has chosen DreamHack as its partner for two live international OWCS events during the 2024 season: the OWCS Major at DreamHack Dallas and the season finals at DreamHack Stockholm.
OWCS Open Qualifiers are scheduled to commence shortly after the conclusion of the current season, starting in February in the Asian region and March in North America and EMEA.
