New World: Aeternum Will Make Your Character Names Up for Grabs if You’re Inactive

Starting on October 15, with the launch of New World: Aeternum, Amazon will implement a new policy that makes character names of inactive players available for others to claim.

This new policy, announced today, coincides with the game's relaunch, which will now also be available on consoles and feature cross-play functionality. This change is logical, considering the integration of platforms.

"From October 15, the following change will take effect: after 6 months of inactivity, character names will be available for new players to choose. This includes characters that have not been played for six months before October 15," Amazon announced.

Therefore, if you have been inactive for some time and wish to keep your character names, you will need to log in with the characters whose names you want to retain before the deadline. There will be no grace period. If you have been inactive for more than 6 months, it doesn't mean your character's name will be automatically removed. However, if another player chooses your character's name while it is marked as inactive, the new player will claim the name, and you will have to rename your character the next time you log in.

This system is similar to what several other games have done, although some have added options to keep names even when inactive as a subscriber privilege. New World, being a buy-to-play game, does not have this option, so plan to log in if you want to avoid the process of selecting a new character name that has not already been taken.
