This marks the first time Digital Extremes has introduced the ability to romance not just one, but five potential love interests. In true 1999 fashion, you'll be doing this by logging online and sending emails from your old-fashioned PC, complete with a vintage CRT monitor.

At Tennocon 2024, players were introduced to the romance system that will debut with Warframe 1999. Arthur will meet his protoframe companions from the Hex Syndicate: Amir, Aoi, Quincy, Leticia, and Eleanor, as he builds a relationship that culminates in a New Year's kiss.

“What we’ve essentially done is allow you to build rapport through instant messaging,” said Rebecca Ford, the creative director behind Warframe, during our interview at Tennocon. “This includes conversations, deep dives, getting to know these characters better,” she continued. “If you put yourself in a position where you’re confident enough to have a relationship with this person and they reciprocate, and you’ve done all this because we’re in 1999 and it’s that y2k moment—there will be an opportunity for you to have a New Year's kiss with your romantic partner.”

With romance on the table, Rebecca confirmed that the relationship you choose to form will be a lasting and meaningful partnership in your journey through 1999. However, just because the relationship is significant, 1999 is also replayable, meaning you might see a different outcome if you pursue a different relationship later on.

“You could spend your time playing and engaging with the content and have a different partner,” Rebecca confirmed. “You can have the same person. You can change, more to come on that,” she teased. “But our intention is that you’re not stuck forever, and if you make a mistake, that’s okay. It’ll be a bit more forgiving, but we want to keep you within the world’s fiction.”
