The gaming world just received a massive jolt of energy. During The Game Awards 2025, a surprise announcement stole the spotlight: Highguard.

Developed by Wildlight Entertainment, this title isn't just another shooter; it is a project built by a "supergroup" of developers who previously shaped the foundations of modern gaming at Respawn Entertainment.

If you have spent hundreds of hours in Apex Legends or Titanfall, you are already familiar with the DNA of this team.

When is the Highguard release date?

Highguard is scheduled to launch on January 26, 2026. This release date came as a shock to many, as most "big reveal" trailers at major events usually point toward a distant future.

Instead, Wildlight Entertainment chose to wait until the game was nearly finished before showing it to the world, meaning we are only weeks away from getting our hands on it.

The game will be available as a free-to-play title, following the successful model of its spiritual predecessors. You can find more details about the launch timeline on the official Steam page.

What kind of game is Highguard exactly?

Highguard is being described as a PvP Raid Shooter, a genre hybrid that moves away from the traditional Battle Royale formula.

While many expected another "last man standing" experience, Wildlight is pivoting toward objective-based team play.

Players step into the boots of Wardens, who are essentially arcane gunslingers blending high-speed shooting with mythical abilities.

The core gameplay loop centers on two rival crews of Wardens clashing on a mythical continent.

The objective is to secure territory, but there is a twist: it is a multi-phase experience. First, you fight to secure an artifact called the Shieldbreaker.

Once you have it, the mission shifts into a full-scale raid where you must invade and destroy the enemy's base to claim victory. It feels like a mix of a hero shooter, a tactical objective mode, and a high-fantasy siege.

What are the main gameplay mechanics?

The most striking feature revealed so far is the inclusion of mounts in a first-person shooter environment.

While games like Realm Royale played with this idea, Highguard seems to integrate it into a much faster, more fluid combat system.

You can fight on horseback or on foot, navigating massive, highly detailed maps that include everything from ancient castles to deep underground mines.

Strategic coordination is the name of the game here. Because it is a raid shooter, you aren't just looking for kills; you are managing map control.

The trailer showcased a "massive castle-sized tank with a lion's head," suggesting that the scale of the "raids" in this PvP environment will be much larger than your typical 5v5 skirmish.

Which platforms will support Highguard?

Highguard is launching on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The developers have confirmed that the game will feature full cross-play and cross-progression from day one.

This is a huge win for friend groups split across different hardware, ensuring the player base remains unified and matchmaking stays fast.

For PC players, the requirements have already been listed. To run the game smoothly, you will want at least an Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, paired with an RTX 2080 or RX 6650 XT. Interestingly, the developers explicitly recommend an NVMe SSD, highlighting the game's focus on fast loading and high-fidelity environments.

The countdown to January 26 has officially begun. Whether Highguard becomes the next "forever game" or a cult classic depends on how well that raid mechanic holds up in a live environment, but the initial buzz is certainly there.
