Get ready for Apex Legends to venture beyond the traditional Battle Royale format in the next year, aiming to broaden its community and evolve the IP.

This insight comes from Electronic Arts CEO, Andrew Wilson, speaking at the recent Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. Last week, Wilson announced a 5% reduction in EA's overall workforce and a new focus on company growth. EA's overarching announcements also included a renewed emphasis on intellectual properties and expanding their biggest successes, with Apex Legends squarely in focus.

Apex Legends has been a major hit for EA, with the live service game entering its sixth season boasting a significant player retention rate of 75%, numbering in the hundreds of millions. These are loyal players in an era where turnover is common. Wilson cites the game's large global community and their loyalty as a solid foundation, but also emphasizes growth. "It's a core game; it's not for the faint of heart when you drop into it, and that's part of its charm and why people love it," he says, before adding that one of their short-term goals is to make things a bit friendlier for new players. The 20th season, Breakout, is intentionally focused on driving growth and making the game a bit more welcoming, and its next phase is where we'll start to see the roots of that branching out.

"How do we think about more game modes, about expanding beyond the traditional universe of Battle Royale?" Wilson says about phase two. Finally, phase three will include elements in the pursuit of markets they haven't really penetrated yet.

With its impressive retention rates, Respawn is at least starting from a good place as it plans how to expand its game and try to work its magic in new regions.
