DayZ will receive its third major expansion in 2026: Badlands. The new content takes players to the Province of Nasdara, a desert region devastated by decades of war.

With its arid climate, scarce resources, and an entirely new 267 km² map, Badlands is set to significantly change the survival dynamics of the game.

Located west of Chernarus and bordering Takistan, Nasdara features a harsh environment of cracked soil, sand-blasted plains, and dry mountains. The region is the result of a long-standing proxy war, leaving behind abandoned cities, destroyed infrastructure, and decommissioned oil fields.

The current silence contrasts with the remnants of past battles, creating a hostile and tension-filled atmosphere.

The Largest Map in the Game’s History

The new terrain in Badlands will be the largest ever introduced in DayZ, surpassing all previous maps with 267 km² of explorable area. The expansion aims to deliver a harsher survival experience, where elements like dehydration and heat exposure will play a critical role in gameplay.

According to released information, the desert environment will require new strategies from players. Managing hydration, wearing climate-appropriate gear, and adapting to the scarcity of shelter will be recurring challenges throughout the journey in Nasdara.

A Setting Shaped by War and Abandonment

Nasdara’s landscapes reflect the consequences of global conflict. Players will be able to explore locations such as destroyed military zones, evacuated villages, deserted checkpoints, dense war-torn cities, and ruined industrial sites. This setting reinforces the post-apocalyptic tone of the expansion and broadens the possibilities for exploration and emergent storytelling.

A key feature of the map is its emphasis on regional elements, including desert-adapted infected variants and location-specific threats. Structures such as abandoned mines, oil pipelines, and makeshift camps also shape the setting.

New Items, Infected Variants, and Emergent Narrative

In addition to the new map and desert climate, Badlands introduces original content. Highlights include:

  • Region-specific gear and weapons: Equipment and firearms designed for desert survival, including weather-appropriate clothing, hydration resources, and weapons inspired by local conflict and culture.
  • Adapted infected: New enemy types that are more resistant to heat and behave differently in the dry environment.
  • Player-driven storytelling: The progression of the story will emerge from player interaction. Forming groups, claiming territories, and uncovering lost secrets in the desert will directly influence the outcome of each game session.

The expansion maintains the game’s hallmark focus on open narrative, where alliances, conflict, and survival naturally emerge from player interaction. Rather than a linear campaign, Badlands favors stories built collectively.

Trailer and Release

An official trailer has already been released, showcasing the new environment, glimpses of the new infected variants, and the harsh climate mechanics. The expansion is scheduled for release sometime in 2026, with no specific date confirmed.

With Badlands, the title expands its boundaries both in scale and setting, introducing a new kind of challenge: surviving not just other players and infected, but the environment itself.
