Diablo IV has released a new video in celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day. Titled "Hell Welcomes All," the video features team members and community members discussing the importance of the game's accessibility features, which were integrated based on extensive feedback.
Diablo IV offers an extensive list of over 50 accessibility options from launch, which has received widespread praise. At the beginning of the video, we meet various players who have been able to enjoy Diablo IV thanks to these accessibility options and the overall design that incorporates them from the outset. Players' experiences vary, covering disabilities such as blindness, dyslexia, hearing impairments, and processing difficulties, among others.
Drew McCrory, Diablo's accessibility lead, reached out and engaged with community members, including a clan called Sightless Slayers, to involve disabled players in the accessibility discussion.
One of the featured players, Ross (known as ross_r), clearly states, "When you include people with disabilities, they are experts in their disabilities. They can tell you exactly what they need." McCrory reinforces this idea, using a frequently repeated phrase in the disability community – "nothing about us without us."
Blizzard has been working with the community and consultants for years to add more accessibility options to their games. While in the past, accessibility options were limited to features like colorblind mode, today we see new ways to play that avoid issues such as motion sickness in World of Warcraft dungeons.
The Diablo IV video delves deeply into the process of creating and refining the game's many accessibility options.
