The story begins with the original Requiem squad — Grigori Weaver, Dr. Elizabeth Grey, Major Mackenzie "Mac" Carver, and Maya Aguinaldo — being pulled into the Dark Aether after a battle atop the Janus Towers.
Inside the Dark Aether, the boundaries between time and reality blur. This unknown dimension becomes the stage for reanimated horrors, mysterious entities, multiple timelines, and distorted versions of classic Zombies characters.
The Zombies mode continues the Dark Aether narrative arc established in previous Call of Duty games.

Characters: the expanded squad
Alongside the four Requiem members, the Zombies mode introduces an expanded squad of eight fighters, bringing back classic characters from alternate timelines:
- Tank Dempsey – the tough American soldier, a long-time staple of the Zombies storyline.
- Takeo Masaki – exiled ronin, embodying the samurai spirit across timelines.
- Nikolai Belinski – battle-hardened Soviet, known for his dark humor and will to survive.
