The Fearless Draft system has established itself as one of the biggest changes in the competitive League of Legends scene. The format modifies champion selection rules in best-of-three and best-of-five series, reducing repeated picks during matches and expanding strategic diversity in professional games.
The mechanic began gaining traction after its adoption in the LPL 2024, China’s premier LoL league. Since then, the system has been implemented in international tournaments organized by Riot Games and expanded to every major competitive region in 2025.
Fearless Draft features two versions. In the Soft Fearless model, a team cannot reuse champions it previously selected, although the opposing side may still pick them. In Hard Fearless, any champion used in a game becomes unavailable for both teams for the remainder of the series.
The change was designed to combat repetitive drafts and increase the variety of competitive picks. Data from the professional scene showed that MSI 2025 featured 109 different champions across 80 matches, surpassing previous editions of the tournament.
The impact was also evident at Worlds 2025, the first World Championship played under the Fearless Draft system. The event concluded with more unique champions selected than total games played, a milestone not seen since 2015.
The implementation has also increased the demands placed on professional players, who now need to master a wider range of champions to maintain strategic flexibility throughout long series. David “Phreak” Turley, analyst at Riot Games, stated that the system encouraged players to expand their champion pools and diversify their playstyles.
