With the announcement of Janthir Wilds and the forthcoming introduction of the spear as a new weapon for all professions, Guild Wars 2 is offering a glimpse into how Guardians, Rangers, and Necromancers will adapt to the new addition upon its release.
In an initial overview of the spear, the team revealed that each profession will have its own customized approach to spear usage, tailoring it to their unique traits in order to provide diverse and engaging gameplay.
The Guardian wields the spear as a strategic support tool, combining precise and timed attacks to defeat enemies and aid allies. With its extended reach, the Guardian can cast support chains from a distance, granting additional effects to subsequent attacks. A notable example is the Helio Rush, which not only deals damage to enemies but, if it hits an ally, provides a boost in healing and resolution, allowing the Guardian to intervene quickly in crucial moments.
For Rangers, stealth becomes a key element in utilizing the new spear. A new type of automatic attack allows for spear throwing at a distance, but upon approaching, combat switches to melee. Each of the Ranger's spear skills is named after animals, and stealth upgrades can be unlocked for enhanced versions. For example, the Falcon's Stoop rapidly hurls the spear towards an enemy, while the upgraded version, Owl's Flight, summons a spirit owl for even greater impact.
The Necromancer's spear is designed to offer versatility, although its primary purpose is melee power damage. Spear skills generate soul fragments that can be strategically consumed to damage enemies and provide healing to the Necromancer. Combining mobility and potential for powerful combos, the spear kit offers new tactical opportunities as players master its mechanics.
Guild Wars 2 plans to hold a spear beta at the end of the month, giving everyone the chance to experience these skill sets and explore spear options for other professions yet to be revealed.
