The question of PUBG cross platform support is one of the most persistent in the gaming world, right up there with "Did you remember to loot the airdrop?" or "Who shot me from where?!"

Given how massive PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is, and how many different devices you can play it on (from high-end PCs to consoles to the phone you're probably reading this on) it's only natural that players want to jump into the same match with all their friends, no matter what they own.

The short answer to the big question, "Is PUBG cross platform?" is a classic gaming cop-out: Yes, but with some major restrictions.

It's not the universal free-for-all that games like Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone offer.

Instead, PUBG's crossplay is carefully segmented into distinct ecosystems, primarily for the sake of fair and balanced gameplay.

Think of it less like one big pool and more like several separate, though equally intense, swimming lanes.

Xbox and PlayStation

If you're a console player, you're in the best position for crossplay. This is the one area where the game truly breaks down the walls between major competitors.

The Console Alliance: A Full YES

  • Supported Crossplay: Xbox One / Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 4 / PlayStation 5.

This is where the magic happens. If you're dropping into Erangel on a PlayStation 5, you will be in the same matchmaking pool and in the same lobbies as players on an Xbox Series X.

This has been a feature for several years now, and it's fantastic for the health of the game on consoles. It means:

  1. Faster Matchmaking: Combining the player base of both console families significantly reduces the time you spend waiting in the lobby. More players equal quicker games, which is a massive win for a battle royale title.
  2. Bigger Squads: You can finally squad up with your buddies who prefer the other console. The game features its own internal friends list, allowing you to add and invite players regardless of whether they are on a PlayStation or an Xbox.
  3. A Shared Community: It creates one unified, large console community, which is always a positive thing for a competitive multiplayer game.

This console-to-console crossplay is the most complete and seamless form of cross-platform play that PUBG: Battlegrounds currently offers. It’s what most people are hoping for when they ask about the feature, and for console players, it’s a reality.

PC

Now, let's address the most common frustration point for players: the separation between PC and console.

If you're on a PlayStation or Xbox, can you play with your friend on a high-end gaming PC running the Steam or Krafton version of the game?

PC to Console: A Firm NO

  • PC Crossplay Status: Not Supported with Xbox or PlayStation.
  • PC Play Pool: PC players are restricted to playing with other PC players only (those on Steam, Epic Games, or the Krafton launcher).

This separation is not an oversight. It's a deliberate choice by the developers, Krafton, and it all boils down to two critical factors: fairness and game balance.

The Input Method Imbalance

The biggest argument against PC-to-console crossplay in a fast-paced shooter is the difference in control methods:

  • Mouse and Keyboard (PC): Offers vastly superior precision, faster turning, and more granular control over aiming. For competitive shooter genres, this input method is objectively advantageous.
  • Controller (Console): While perfectly functional and comfortable, controllers generally cannot match the speed and accuracy of a mouse, even with console aim assist enabled.

Putting a keyboard and mouse player against a controller player in a battle royale scenario would create a deeply unfair competitive environment.

The PC player would have a significant advantage in most close-to-mid-range gunfights, and that’s a recipe for player frustration.

To maintain the competitive integrity of the game, the player base has to be segmented. PC players compete against other PC players, which keeps the playing field level for all participants in that ecosystem.

The Different Ecosystems

There are other, more technical reasons as well:

  • Server Architecture: The PC and console versions of PUBG run on different server architectures and have different update cycles. This makes blending the two pools a massive technical hurdle.
  • Risk of Cheating: The PC environment generally has a higher risk of third-party software and hacking than the closed console environments. Merging the pools could potentially expose console players to more cheaters, which is something the developers actively try to avoid.

Mobile

The situation becomes even more complicated when you look at the mobile version, PUBG Mobile.

PUBG Mobile Crossplay: Strictly Mobile-Only

  • Supported Crossplay: iOS and Android devices only.
  • Mobile-to-Console/PC: Not Supported.

PUBG Mobile is essentially a completely separate product.

It's developed by a different studio (Tencent Games under license from Krafton), runs on a modified game engine optimized for mobile devices, and features a different control scheme (touchscreen).

Because of these fundamental differences, there is zero crossplay between PUBG Mobile and the PC or console versions of the game.

Trying to match a mobile player using a touchscreen with a PC player using a mouse and keyboard, or even a console player, would be exponentially more unbalanced than the PC/console split.

The mechanics, maps, and even the time-to-kill (TTK) are often tuned differently to suit the on-the-go nature of mobile gaming.

The only crossplay in the mobile space is between the two dominant mobile operating systems: Android and iOS.

This is standard for almost all popular mobile games and works perfectly to keep the mobile queues populated.

Cross-Progression and Accounts

Cross-platform play is one thing, but what about cross-progression? This feature allows you to keep all your hard-earned skins, gear, battle pass progress, and rank when you move from one platform to another.

Cross-Progression: Almost Nonexistent

Sadly, this is another area where PUBG falls short of the current industry standard.

  • Between Console Generations (PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Series X|S): YES. If you upgrade your console within the same family, your progress, purchases, and account data will seamlessly transfer over using your linked Krafton ID. This is expected and works great.
  • Between PC, Console, and Mobile: NO. If you have a fully decked-out PC account and decide to buy a console, you will be starting over at Level 1 with no items or progression. The same goes for jumping from console to PC, or trying to link any of these to your PUBG Mobile account.

The reason for this lack of progression is multifaceted, often touching on legal and commercial agreements with the different platform holders (Microsoft, Sony, Valve, Google, Apple).

Different platforms have different rules for in-game marketplaces and currency, making the transfer of purchased goods a complex logistical and business nightmare.

For the player, it means choosing one primary platform and sticking with it if you want to keep your cosmetic collection and stats centralized.

The State of PUBG Cross-Platform in 2025

As of now, the cross-platform landscape in PUBG: Battlegrounds remains clearly defined and siloed.

Platform EcosystemCrossplay SupportWhy the Restriction?
Xbox & PlayStationYES (Full Console Crossplay)Balanced input (controllers) and large player pool.
PC $\leftrightarrow$ ConsoleNOMouse/Keyboard advantage, server differences, and anti-cheat concerns.
Mobile $\leftrightarrow$ Any OtherNOCompletely separate game engine, control method (touchscreen), and development teams.
PC $\leftrightarrow$ PCYES (Steam, Epic, Krafton)Unified environment and input method.

Krafton has made it clear through their actions and past statements that their priority is maintaining a fair and balanced competitive environment.

For the time being, that commitment outweighs the desire for universal crossplay that includes the PC master race.

In a game where the split-second decision and the slightest accuracy advantage can be the difference between a Chicken Dinner and a humiliating defeat, the developers have chosen to protect the integrity of the match over the convenience of a unified player base.

The console ecosystem is thriving thanks to the crossplay that exists between Xbox and PlayStation.

If you are a console player, your experience is smooth and connected. If you are hoping to team up with friends across the PC, console, and mobile divide, however, you will need to continue hoping for a future announcement, or simply play on the same version of the game.

Until then, you can be sure that when you drop onto the battlegrounds, the players you’re facing will have the same core limitations and advantages as you do.
