The World of Tanks community has long been involved in charitable initiatives, and one such campaign has yielded remarkable results. By raising funds for the K9s for Warriors organization in the United States, World of Tanks players managed to sponsor a service dog for a veteran in need, earning a commemorative plaque in recognition of their achievement.
To celebrate Memorial Day, we want to highlight Sherman’s journey and the excellent work done by K9s for Warriors to support veterans in need. As someone who grew up on military bases and witnessed the challenges faced by service members, especially after 9/11, this story holds special significance.
World of Tanks began its partnership with K9s for Warriors several years ago, raising money to help provide service dogs to veterans dealing with PTSD, traumatic injuries, and other challenges, aiming to reduce the rate of veteran suicides. Since the start of this collaboration, the North American World of Tanks community has raised over $84,000, sponsoring not just a training kennel but also a dog that would eventually be trained to assist a veteran.
K9s for Warriors is the largest veterans' service organization in the United States, focused on providing highly trained service dogs to veterans in need. Many of these dogs are rescued from shelters, saving them from abandonment or worse fates. Each dog is carefully trained to meet the specific needs of their future veteran companion, considering the personalities and needs of both.
Dogs that complete the training are paired with a veteran in need, forming a partnership that benefits both for a lifetime. Those that do not complete the training are adopted by families looking for great pets, ensuring every animal finds a loving home.
The World of Tanks community sponsored a dog to be trained for a veteran, with the opportunity to name the dog. They fittingly named him Sherman.
Sherman’s journey began in December 2023. This black lab learned essential commands to help his future veteran, such as "Stand," which keeps a safe distance between the veteran and others. The initial training also focuses on teaching the dog to remain calm, providing comfort to the veteran. Sherman learned to balance playfulness with moments of seriousness, ensuring he was ready to support his warrior in any situation.
In January, Sherman started to get accustomed to various environments, like parks and stores, to learn how to behave in different scenarios. He also learned the command "Brace," which helps his partner to stand up or sit down, crucial for veterans with injuries.
February was a month of additional challenges, with Sherman training in a busy convention center to gain experience in crowded environments. In March, he learned the command "Front," where he positions himself in front of his partner to create space in crowded situations, such as airports.
Sherman continued his training through April, navigating stores and walkways, learning the skills needed to support Edith, a U.S. Army veteran. This incredible journey, facilitated by the generosity of the World of Tanks community, potentially saved two lives—a remarkable achievement worth celebrating.
To recognize the community's generosity, K9s for Warriors placed a plaque in the sponsored training kennel in Florida. While Sherman has found his partner, many veterans and dogs are still waiting to be paired, and the mission of K9s for Warriors continues.
