Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 introduces DMZ, an extraction mode developed by Infinity Ward that combines exploration, resource gathering, missions, and combat against both other players and AI-controlled enemies. In a hands-on preview published by PC Gamer, the mode stood out for its persistent progression, varied map activities, and systems designed to reduce the time spent preparing for each match.
The preview took place during a three-day event in Los Angeles, where journalist Morgan Park played approximately 24 hours across the campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ. PC Gamer had not assigned a final score at the time, as the game still needed to be tested against the wider player community after launch.

How DMZ combines extraction gameplay with permanent progression
DMZ takes place in Hajin City, a large urban map that also features natural environments and high-risk zones. Matches last 30 minutes and support squads of up to three players. Late deployment is not allowed. At launch, there are no dedicated solo or duo queues, although matchmaking attempts to pair squads of similar sizes.
During each deployment, players collect materials, find weapons, and complete contracts to improve their equipment. Money earned through certain activities is retained even if an operator dies before extraction, reducing the impact of losing a run.
Progression also unlocks stations at the Forward Operating Base (FOB), crafting recipes, and permanent character perks. Some perks allow players to start a match with a free self-revive. When an operator dies in the field, they enter an MIA state, which can be reversed by spending in-game currency.
Weapons are configured through Gunsmith, but attachments must be purchased with DMZ currency. According to the preview, these costs can add up quickly, making it important to plan weapon choices and the resources brought into each deployment.
Dynamic Ops and story missions expand exploration
One of DMZ's main features is the combination of randomized objectives and narrative missions. Dynamic Ops appear during matches and introduce multi-stage tasks, such as destroying facilities associated with chemical weapons. Some activities may repeat, but they provide clear objectives for exploring Hajin City and collecting resources.
The map also contains restricted areas, buildings with locked rooms, security systems, and special enemies. In one example described by Park, a key found while searching for materials led to the Netshin technology complex in The Grid, a high-risk zone.
The deployment ended in a fight against Jang-ui, one of the lieutenants who can appear randomly during matches. The encounter involved automated turrets, reinforcement soldiers, and heavily armored enemies. After defeating the target, the player received a modified weapon, crafting materials, and a manual that permanently unlocked a weapon crafting option.
The encounter illustrates how exploration can create additional objectives during a match. A routine search for materials can lead to dangerous locations, rare rewards, and alternative extraction routes.
DMZ also includes six story missions available from the start. These feature set-piece scenarios, including a casino heist and a sequence inside a hospital under attack. Their dedicated narrative structure offers an introduction to extraction gameplay for newcomers.
PvE and PvP combat share the streets of Hajin City
DMZ features AI-controlled patrols, helicopters, drones, and other enemies. Although these opponents may be less complex than some threats in other extraction games, they can overwhelm unprepared players, particularly in confined spaces or during prolonged fights.
Combat against other players is another part of the experience. The mode includes rewards for collecting identification tags from defeated operators, a bounty contract board, and competitive rankings. However, the preview noted that it was too early to judge the depth of PvP encounters because the number of matches against real players was limited.
Infinity Ward has also introduced systems to speed up preparation. Ammunition, armor plates, and certain materials are managed automatically, while common items can be collected without requiring players to organize every backpack slot manually.
These changes reduce inventory management and leave more time for exploration and objectives.
Modern Warfare 4 campaign features new characters and open-ended missions
The Modern Warfare 4 campaign lasts approximately six hours and partly follows a group of young South Korean Marines during an invasion of North Korea. The story also features American characters and a parallel storyline involving Captain John Price, who appears as a fugitive following the events of previous entries in the series.
According to PC Gamer, missions featuring the new military characters are among the campaign's highlights. Sequences such as "Mayhem" and "Losing Ground" depict attempts to defend Hajin City against superior forces, while "Counter Attack" focuses on a large-scale military operation.
"Stranded" stands out for its more open structure. After an accident behind enemy lines, players must complete three non-linear objectives, explore optional areas, and use a hideout to craft equipment, weapons, and camouflage.
The campaign reuses gathering and crafting mechanics similar to those in DMZ, but places them in a map designed specifically for the single-player experience. The preview also notes differences in quality between the two storylines: missions featuring the new characters received praise, while the sections focused on Price were considered less developed.
The review of Modern Warfare 4 is still ongoing. The quality of DMZ matches against real players and the full post-launch experience will be important factors in reaching a final verdict.
