Amazon Games announced this morning that they will open a test version of their upcoming console release of the MMO New World in July this year, giving Xbox and PlayStation players the chance to explore Aeternum for the first time.

Announced at the Summer Game Fest on June 7th, New World: Aeternum is the next major update coming to both consoles and PC on October 15th. While console players will be experiencing the game for the first time, existing PC players will receive a significant update. This free update will bring new features and content, especially for those who own last year’s expansion, "Rise of the Angry Earth." However, even without this expansion, there will be plenty of new content to explore.

To ensure a high-quality experience, Amazon Games decided to conduct additional testing. As this is the company's first large-scale venture into console gaming, it makes sense to organize a console-only closed beta. This beta will allow the team to gather valuable data and make necessary adjustments before the official release in October.

The closed beta test will run from July 11th at 9 AM PT to July 17th at 9 AM PT and will feature cross-play between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. Interested players can sign up for a chance to participate and experience the console version ahead of its release later this year.

The transition to include consoles in New World: Aeternum has not been without controversy. In the past six days, the PC gaming community has expressed dissatisfaction, feeling neglected in favor of the new audience. This feeling of exclusion is something some players experienced previously with the changes to PvP before the original launch. In a recent Q&A session, Amazon Games attempted to reassure the community that PC players will remain an integral part of the game, but the response has still been largely negative.

Despite mixed reactions, MMORPG.com contributor Kazuma enjoyed his time with the PlayStation 5 version of New World: Aeternum during the Summer Game Fest Play Days. He also had the opportunity to talk with the development team about the new changes and why Amazon is now promoting New World: Aeternum as an ARPG instead of an MMO.
