Grinding Gear Games officially released the 0.5.0 update for Path of Exile 2 on May 29, 2026, titled Return of the Ancients. This is one of the game's largest updates to date, introducing a new rune-based crafting system, a complete endgame overhaul, and two new Ascendancies.

New League: Runes of Aldur

The main highlight of patch 0.5.0 is the Runes of Aldur league. During exploration, players can discover Remnants, special structures that allow item creation through runic recipes.

• The more slots a Remnant contains, the greater the crafting possibilities.
• Rarer Remnants generate equipment with more powerful modifiers.
• Each additional rune increases the difficulty of the encounters required to claim the item.

The league also introduces the NPC Farrow and the Verisium Runeforging system, allowing players to modify equipment using the new Verisium resource.

Runic Ward: A New Advanced Defensive Layer

The update adds Runic Ward, a defensive mechanic that activates when a character's life reaches critical levels. It absorbs additional damage and features its own regeneration system. The mechanic integrates directly with the new rune crafting system.

Completely Reworked Endgame with Origins of Divinity

The endgame now features an entirely new structure called Origins of Divinity. Players explore fortresses across the Atlas to earn points for the expanded passive skill tree, which now contains more than 300 nodes.

Key endgame additions include:

• 30 new map areas
• New access maps and returning modifiers
• New fortresses
• New Pinnacle Boss: Arbiter of Divinity

Classic Mechanics with Dedicated Progression Campaigns

Several popular mechanics now feature their own narrative progression systems:

Delirium: New hub area, brand-new monsters, and a new Pinnacle Boss.
Breach: Introduces the Genesis Tree for crafting rings, amulets, and belts.
Ritual: Adds a map sequence called Rite of the Nameless.
Fate of the Vaal: Permanently integrated into the game with its own passive tree, Temple of Atziri improvements, and new rewards.

Two New Ascendancies

Update 0.5.0 introduces two new Ascendancies:

Martial Artist (Monk): Focused on illusions, spectral bells, and unarmed combat.
Spirit Walker (Huntress): Summons deer, owl, and bear spirits, alongside spectral companions.

Quality-of-Life Improvements and Additional Content

Other major additions include:

• More than 40 new unique items
• New support gems and skills
• Native support for build guides
• Quick trade price search functionality
• New fragment storage tab
• Ability to revive allies after defeating bosses

All existing characters remain fully compatible. GGG will provide a free passive tree respec due to the extensive balance and progression changes.

Is the 0.5.0 Update Worth Following?

The Return of the Ancients update represents one of the most significant expansions ever announced for Path of Exile 2. It introduces a new league, expands character customization options, completely reworks the endgame experience, and adds new progression systems that directly impact post-campaign gameplay.

Path of Exile 2 is available on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game features full cross-play and cross-progression support, allowing players to continue the same adventure across different platforms without losing characters, items, or progress.

In addition, players looking for a more stable connection during maps, endgame bosses, and other online activities can use NoPing Game Booster. The tool helps reduce high ping, minimize packet loss, and optimize routing to game servers. New users can try the service for free and evaluate the results before subscribing to a paid plan.
