How to Calculate Pixel Density? (PPI Calculator)

To calculate the pixel density of a screen, you need two things:

  • The resolution (number of pixels horizontally and vertically)
  • The screen size in inches (diagonal measurement)

The formula goes like this:

PPI = √(horizontal² + vertical²) / screen size

Let’s do a quick example:

If you’ve got a 24-inch monitor with a resolution of 1920×1080:

  • Horizontal: 1920
  • Vertical: 1080
  • Screen size: 24

Plug those into the formula:

PPI = √(1920² + 1080²) / 24
PPI ≈ √(3,686,400 + 1,166,400) / 24
PPI ≈ √4,852,800 / 24
PPI ≈ 2,202 / 24 ≈ 91.75

So that monitor has a pixel density of about 92 PPI.
